This cabin had been repaired in the past and some areas that rotted before were rotten again!  When we came in, we knew that something major was wrong.  We needed to find out exactly what  was causing the rot.   The cause turned out to be some unusual rooflines that allowed water to collect and concentrate on the logs and crowns, which in turn, led to rot.

While repairing the rotten logs was part of the solution, stopping the water from cascading down the wall was just as important.  A good heavy-duty gutter system was definitely needed to divert the water in these areas away from the logs.

The building also had a dark thick ‘varnish’ type of coating on it.  This type of finish does not allow the logs to “breath” and this certainly contributed to the rot in the logs.

First, we blasted the home to remove the old varnish.  After the varnish was removed, we repaired the logs.  The logs we use are Western Cedar.  The reason we use cedar for our replacement logs is because of its inherent resistance to rot. (See Our Cedar Logs)  We worked with the owners of this cabin to get the project completed.  Our crew did the blasting and log work and the owners did the staining of the exterior logs themselves.
