See more projectsLately, we have had a little flurry of calls regarding vertical log homes. We have a couple of ways to approach this type of repair. One way is to replace the entire vertical log. We developed another way to fix vertical logs by essentially cutting off the bottoms of the logs and putting in a log or cedar "lumber sill". This does two things: First, it supports the wall and second, it gives the house a bit more "freeboard", i.e. gets it up off the ground. Why this is important is that when water continually splashes off the ground or some other surface onto the the logs closest to the ground, it can lead to rot.

If there is more freeboard, the lower logs are better protected from damage due to splash back. The first several slides show this process. Another technique for repairing rotten vertical logs is to replace the log or part of the log. Sometimes it makes sense to simply splice a new section of log to the old one to get rid of the rot. This is the simplest and lease costly repair for this type of rot. Another way is to replace the entire log from the foundation to the roof line. The slide show shows an example of this type of repair on a project we did near Hayward, WI. We use dried cedar for our replacement logs. Because of its inherent resistance to rot, we provide a guarantee against future rot on logs that we replace. Check out our warranty!
