Here is a good example of replacing what we call "cabin logs". Cabin logs are cut flat on the top and bottom in order to make them uniform for ease of construction.

Most of these "cabin log" buildings eventually need to be chinked or caulked because of the potential for water to sit on the shelves created on the flat edge of the logs. (See"Why do Logs Rot"

On this project near Ashland, WI on Lake Superior we replaced a number rotted logs, and chinked the entire home to prevent water from making its way in between the logs. Check out the photos.
