Log buildings have been a part of American culture since the days of the settlers. There are many log structures still in use that date back well over a hundred years. Each log home or cabin has its own unique aesthetic and tells its own story.

Edmunds & Company appreciates the intrinsic beauty of log buildings and understands the importance of preserving these treasures for future generations to enjoy.

Over the past thirty years, we have had the privilege to work on some treasured historic log buildings, not only in the Midwest, but also in other places beyond.

One of the reasons we have been successful with this type of restoration work is that we can balance the desire to retain the authentic look and charm of the log building with the use of modern techniques and materials that will keep the structure in good “health” for the foreseeable future.

For example: At the time some of these historic log buildings were constructed, Oakum chink was a good product to use. It kept flying insects out and allowed for air infiltration, which let the logs dry out from intermittent moisture. Many years later, our experience has shown that over time, the fibers in the rope lose the oils that acted as a preservative. Also, small rodents like to use oakum to build their nests, which can create its own set of problems.

Removing Oakum chink and replacing it with modern, synthetic chink is a good compromise because latex chink adheres better to the logs and can flex with the natural expansion and contraction of the wood, thus minimizing the chance that water and get in behind the chink.
