    Replacing Whole Logs

This is a project we did in the Minong/Hayward area in Wisconsin in the fall of 2009. This hand-scribed home had Sikkens brand stain on it and this particular wall was exposed to the brunt of the weather from the East.

Even with a good overhang, when we arrived on the scene, this wall had developed significant rot. Our crew removed many rotted logs in the log wall, treated the remaining wood with a borate preservative, and installed new Western cedar logs to match the existing logs in the home.

We have seen with some regularity issues arising from film-forming finishes such as Sikkens.

When logs are properly finished, the product should seal the outside of the logs as well as let moisture escape or in other words – the finish needs to be breathable. Keeping the logs dry is the key to preventing log rot in you cabin. These film-forming finishes tend to build up over time and eventually it can cause the kind of problem that is illustrated here.

Here is what our customer had to say after the work was completed:

"Matt - Good to meet you on Monday. Very discouraged to see the amount of moisture in some of the pieces of log your people took off the cabin. It breaks my heart as I put a lot of sweat equity into that place. It was very obvious your people had the ability to do this job. They are surgeons with a chain saw, as were the people that built it. I was on and off watching Barb scribe in a crown. She did patient and awesome work as Jesse and Jed worked on the logs. You have an awesome, able and dedicated crew. Going forward, I will need your help at keeping my cabin in good shape. Thanks.”
